Independent Living Explained

Posted March 5, 2015a-group-of-seniors.jpg

If you or your loved one does not feel ready for daily care, but are ready to stop driving, beginning to worry about personal safety and maybe want more support and companionship while still maintaining independence, then an independent living community may be just the answer you are looking for.

Independent living communities offer a means to simplify their lives without the individual attention found in nursing or assisted living homes. These places offer amenities such as beauty salons, banks, fitness programs and communal meals and sometimes a doctor making regular rounds.  Most communities allow residents to care for themselves while still enjoying a simplified lifestyle free from chores like cooking, cleaning, driving and/or home maintenance.

Each Independent living community differs with the features they offer, but many of the leading communities offer the following features:

  • Chef-prepared meals made daily
  • Activity and wellness coordinators that plan numerous events for the community
  • Weekly housekeeping and linen service
  • Local transportation services
  • Suites that include kitchenettes or even full kitchens
  • Live-in management and/or 24-hour security
  • Chapel services
  • Travel programs
  • On-site barber shops and beauty salons
  • Concierge service

These independent living communities offer 24 hour staffing and security while allowing the residents to maintain their independence. They can live in their own private suite, come and go as they please and make choices right for them, while still remaining under the watchful eye of the management staff. Independent Living communities are a great option to provide a simplified lifestyle, while still enjoying the privacy, dignity, independence and social lifestyle many seniors desire at this point in their life.
